Five stages of the design thinking process for human-centered design.

Project: Humanity Enhancement Release 8.0

Professional Thought Experiment Introduction

Welcome to Humanity Enhancement Release 8.0.

This is a thought experiment designed for Project Managers, Business Analysts, Product Owners, Architects, Risk Managers, Change Managers, Quality Assurance professionals, and anyone who enjoys solving complex problems.

The objective is not to find the "right" answer. Instead, the goal is to observe how different professionals approach the same challenge based on their experience, training, and perspective.

Imagine that Humanity is the world's oldest production system.

After thousands of years of continuous operation, the platform remains remarkably resilient—but recurring defects continue to impact communication, collaboration, decision-making, empathy, trust, and conflict resolution.

Leadership has approved funding for a major enhancement initiative: Humanity Enhancement Release 8.0.

Bring your professional experience. Challenge assumptions. Ask questions. Think creatively. Most importantly...Have fun.

Let's go

Because sometimes the best way to explore how we solve real-world problems is to pretend the biggest project in history has just landed on your desk.

You have been selected as a member of the project team.

Your assignment is to analyze the current environment, identify opportunities for improvement, assess risks, define success, and recommend a strategy for implementing meaningful change while supporting approximately 8 billion active users—without shutting the system down.

As with any enterprise initiative, requirements may be incomplete, stakeholders may disagree, constraints are real, and success depends as much on asking the right questions as proposing the right solutions. There are no hidden answers and no expected framework.

Project Description

Current Known Production Issues

Project Description

Following thousands of years of production support, the Humanity platform has experienced increasing reports of recurring defects affecting communication, decision-making, collaboration, and empathy.

Although numerous hotfixes have been deployed throughout history, root causes remain unresolved and technical debt continues to accumulate.

Leadership has approved funding for Humanity Enhancement Release 8.0.

The project team has been assembled to identify, prioritize, and address the highest-impact improvements while minimizing disruption to approximately 8 billion active users.

Your assignment is to develop the initial project approach.
